The purpose of the editing the car chase sequence was to develop skills and understanding for premier pro editing and different techniques to edit with the software, I developed my understanding to be able to use most of the simple features of premier pro such as cutting scenes, using the preview window to drag in certain lengths of footage.
From this task i developed my editing understanding as well as familiarity with premier having not used it before, one thing i enjoyed particularly from the experience was the effects panel and its simplicity to change a clip so dramatically, as well as the stop watch tool for key noting effects.
The timeline, shows how I attempted to use sfx, cuts and layering to make the footage fast paced and interesting with the provided long clips, a struggle I faced while editing the video was the footage being very shaky at points due to bad filming of the sequence, so to overcome this I had to use the error to my advantage where possible or find moments the camera was smooth using the preview screen.
I particularly liked the preview window as it allowed me to use only parts of a long video I needed or wanted which saved me time from cutting footage manually and deleting remains which is something I did in the past but learning this feature streamlined the process majorly.

The goal for this preliminary task is to work in groups, each making a six shot story board, to mimic somewhat of a real production and come out with an amateur media product which helps us develop an understanding of real-world production set and assist us in furthering our understanding for the rest of the course.
During pre-production each team member made a story-board with our own concept development for any idea within the six shot range. Once each of us finished we came together and decided, by comparison of ideas and quality of the shot lists, which one we liked the most and would want to produce.
Ultimately, we decided on Audrey's, as shown on the right, due to her well established idea and easily understandable storyboard.
Next, came casting the roles which was simple enough due to the limited characters in the story board, so this step was over quickly.
A major part of pre-production was preparation of filming equipment which I especially took a liking to, being able to use equipment which I have not used before and in this case we were assigned old cam-corders as seen in the picture on the left. I learnt the basic controls which at first I found slightly difficult as the software is old and un-familiar, however once I understood it we were ready to record.
During production, I took part in setting up the tri-pod and getting the camera ready for filming while Audrey and Kyra thought about blocking to best setup the framing of our six shots. It took a few takes to get shots which we were happy with however after finishing there were thing which i would've changed that I only noticed in post such as the tracking shot used is quite undesirable for the given scene and doesn't fit into the scene very well. However, something that was made useful by shooting outside was not having to use a lighting setup as the sun in this instance acts as the key-light which came in very handy. Another thing we made sure to do was sound record to capture the natural ambience to simplify continuity in post.
During production, I also played a small acting role as "Mike" the dead guy which I didn't enjoy much but gave me insights to different roles within a production and how a team which can communicate well is very important.
Once finishing all recording, I took the files from the cam-corder and uploaded them to Premier. Having previous limited experience I knew little about editing with the software so learning how to use the razor tool and equivalent hot-keys was vey useful as well as informative for future requirements. Due to the nature of the scene no VFX were used however seeing tutorials in preparation for the editing, it is something which would be intriguing to try in a future project, on the contrary SFX were very useful as they gave the scene more life when it was quite dull. For transitions, simple cuts were used as there was no reason for any fancy cuts, but J and L cuts were used to create a seamless transition effect. Once I was happy with the edited product I rendered it and uploaded it, all in all it was a great way to learn about so many different aspects of a production.
Above is my storyboard, we decided against it as the narrative would be quite mundane and the lack of action would not convey a good story, however, from making this I learnt valuable skills such as storyboarding and script writing, the making of the storyboard images taught me that it did not have to be a hyper-realistic image but something that can be understandable during production.

Today we learnt about three point lighting and it's application in media, as well as this we actively practiced using three point lighting. We learnt about the three different lights:
Key-light: This is the main light and the strongest, it is a replacement for the sun when shooting internally, The hard light will illuminate the subject but create harsh shadows.
Fill light: Fills in the shadows produced by the key light nearly as strong as key light.
Back light: Puts light behind a subject to give a 3D effect to lift off the back wall.
Three point lighting is used to create a 3D effect in the scene to "bring the footage to life", as seen in the image, the key light is used as the main light source of the scene which can be thought of like the sun. Then, the fill light is used to fill in shadows created by the key light so that the object is not too dark, at the same time it shouldn't be as bright as the key light so the ratio is roughly 2:1 from keylight to fill light. Finally, the backlight is used to differentiate the object from the background by giving a dim lit outline to help differentiate from whatever is behind.
Above shows how we used three point lighting (as well as lighting gels) to get a nice image with the camera setup on the tri-pod. When setting up the equipment in our groups we learnt how the lights, especially the metal parts get extremely hot, to the point you don't even want to get oils from your hand on it as we found out that they get smokey very quickly.
Image on the right shows me applying a purple gel over the key-light using wooden clips, as plastic ones may melt, to give the effect shown in the image above, this has made me realize that taking an artistic approach in how media is made requires much more thought than i initially presumed which i will take into account for developing my own products.
Film lighting is based majorly on the light's source, intensity and angles:
Source of light - The physical origin of the light.
Angle of light - The path from where the light has come.
Intensity of light - The amount and the brightness of the light.
For example, the sun is a single source, however, it can come from different angles and intensity depending on the time of day, the angle can also change depending if something like a reflector is used to give a fill light effect from other angles.

Shot reverse shot is when a character is talking to someone or looking at something in a scene and how the camera cuts to that object while often staying on the 180* rule line.
Shot reverse shot is an editing technique which keeps the camera on imaginary lines so that when something is shown in the scene, we are cut to where we were just looking so that all perspectives can be shown in a scene.
The 180* is the "invisible line" previously mentioned which film-makers often stick onto for continuity and to limit confusion for the audience, as seen in the image on the left, the camera should not cross the line as to prevent narrative shots getting confusing with which side which character is on.
The original clip we used is from La La Land and is a conflicting scene between the two characters over a movie role. Shot reverse shot is used to create a smooth dialogue flow and highlight both the characters importance/significance of the scene, the use of shot reverse shot also highlights the proxemics of the characters and how close they are while there is still tension with each other which is an enigma for their relationship in the moment of the scene .
Re-creating the clip for ourselves we used our knowledge of the fuji-film cameras along with RODE boom pole and microphone to record our scene, we kept to the 180* rule and shot the scene twice from both sides of the conversation which then could be used to edit together in post in premier pro. From this I learnt the crucial skills of a mini production including directing actors as well as the importance of a clapperboard to align the audio track with the footage for seamless speech and high quality audio to immerse the viewer in the scene. A challenge i personally faced was editing the footage with the long length clips to put together the scene with the right times.
Comparing the original to our re-creation I think with the lack of experience it is a great effort, however if it was for a more high quality production then there would be more steps taken place for a better scene such as mise-en-scene being more appropriate and not just school uniform as well as location.
On reflection I discovered I really enjoy the production process and how shot reverse shot really brings a scene to life. But other hurdles while making this such as the artificial lighting of the classroom looking bad on the frame rate we shot on taught me that it can be quite challenging to get all factors under control the first time but in the end after trial and error it is possible to produce a piece of media which i can be happy with.

For my title sequence in my final product, I have decided to use after effects. While I'm not sure if it's the one I will keep I followed along a tutorial from videocopilot to learn how to use after effects software, and learn about It's capabilities which I might use later on in my post-production when I need to edit in blood which would otherwise be quite messy with real fx.
